Barka 1, one of Acwa Power's projects in Oman

A consortium led by Saudi-based Acwa Power and Tecton Engineering and Construction has emerged as the preferred bidder for a 45 million  gallons per day independent sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination water project in the UAE emirate of Umm Al Quwain.

The appointment of the preferred bidder by the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) follows a tender exercise and evaluation of bids.

Fewa will now commence a final round of contract discussions with a view to achieve the financial close and ancillary documents within the third quarter of 2018, said a top official.

"This is the first Fewa's desalination plant in co-operation with the private sector and the authority intends to commence three other desalination plants following the same model which will be tendered before the end of this current year," stated the director-general Mohammed Salah.

"As per a study conducted, the locations and capacity of the other three plants are defined. As per our strategic plan, Fewa will be totally independent and securing its water demand by 2022," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
