Veolia, a leading designer and provider of water, waste and energy management solutions, said it has secured a major contract from Baladna, Qatar’s leading dairy producer, to upgrade the existing wastewater treatment facility at its cow farm located in Al Khor, north of Doha. 
 
A global leader in optimised resource management, Veolia said the contract was awarded by Baladna to Veolia Water Technologies Qatar.
 
Baladna’s cow farm is one of the biggest in the GCC with its barn and milk parlour flushing area generating around 6,000 cu m of wastewater per day.
 
As part of the wastewater treatment plant upgrade, Veolia modified and optimised the treatment performance of the existing lagoons and provided a complementary biological process to meet the treated effluent quality necessary for reuse. 
 
The treated water can now be reused for irrigation within the farm and, following further treatment by reverse osmosis, to spray and cool the cows during hot summer months.
 
An audit and analytical monitoring of the site prior to the works showed that the existing wastewater lagoon arrangement had hydraulic issues which resulted in relatively poor performance, said the French water management specialist. 
 
The existing lagoons were also operated without any aeration, contrary to the initial design. 
Through the upgrade of the existing lagoon system, Veolia optimised its process performance to meet Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) removal between 80% to 92%, it stated.
 
Veolia Water Technologies Middle East CEO Thierry Froment said: "Baladna is actively participating in the Qatar National Food Security Program (QNFSP)."

According to him, Veolia's proprietary technologies will allow an increase in the treatment capacity of the plant and enable the treated wastewater to be reused for the site’s purposes.
 
To further treat the effluent, a two-stage AnoxKaldnes Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) process was provided with complete sieve and aeration grid arrangement. 
 
The MBBR process uses microorganisms for biological treatment of wastewater and allows for high treatment capacity in a small footprint, he added.
