UAE-based Modon Properties, a major developer of sustainable residential communities, has set a new new Guinness World Records title for the 'Tallest building demolished using explosives (controlled demolition)' with successful razing of Mina Plaza towers in the Mina Zayed area, Abu Dhabi.

With a total of 144 floors, the four high rise towers were demolished in approximately 10 seconds with stable non-primary explosives placed in 18,000 drill holes within the structures.

The whole process was done with precision through a controlled implosion using stable non-primary explosives of robust qualities and excellent safety record.

Modon was appointed by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) to carry out the demolition of the Mina Plaza towers as well as redevelop designated areas of Mina Zayed.

Spanning over 3 million sq m, the expansive project is set to foster trade and investment operations in the capital, as well as support the development of Abu Dhabi while safeguarding the nation’s authentic identity and heritage.

This overhaul is set to create a new tourist destination in the capital that appeals to both residents and visitors.

Modon said it had partnered with several stakeholders to carry out this project, including Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, Emergency response teams, Abu Dhabi Civil Defense, ambulances, the National Crisis and Disasters Management Authority and other committees.

Joint coordination and cooperation was made with all concerned parties to ensure a smooth and safe demolition event. The Mina Zayed area was evacuated in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Police.

Abu Dhabi Police facilitated various aspects of the demolition including enhanced security and safety, providing support to all teams and key partners that participated in the project. Necessary measures were taken by the police to secure the demolition site with traffic patrols, ensuring the flow of traffic in the areas adjacent to the site and proper road diversions.

Mina Zayed was temporarily closed off for the event to ensure the safety of all residents. Tamouh Healthcare conducted Covid-19 tests for 750-workers who were moved to a temporary housing facility in Al Mafraq Worker City.

On the key milestone, Ahmed Al Shaikh Al Zaabi, the director of delivery at Modon, said: "We are pleased that Guinness World Records has recognised Modon for the successful and safe demolition of Mina Plaza as the tallest building demolished using explosives in a controlled demolition. This historic milestone for Abu Dhabi reaffirms the capital’s ability to execute mega-projects safely."

"We are privileged to be appointed as one of the developers tasked to transform key areas of Mina Zayed and are delighted to play a vital role in the redevelopment of such an iconic area etched in history," he stated.

"This marks a significant step towards the progress of the Mina Zayed community. It also demonstrates the determination of our team and stakeholders to drive this project forward and deliver on the vision of our wise leadership to develop the nation’s capital and position it as one of the most appealing destinations in the world," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
