RTA to build 19 footbridges

DUBAI’S Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is planning to construct 19 footbridges through 2014 to 2015 in various parts of the city.

Seven bridges will be constructed this year and the remaining 12 next year, said Mattar Al Tayer, RTA chairman of the board and executive director.

RTA was expected to start last month the construction of seven of the pedestrian bridges, of which five will be fitted with lifts, according to Al Tayer.

The bridges will be built at various locations such as Bani Yas Street, Al Mina Street, Baghdad Street, at Al Maktoum Street, Amman Street, and Al Rasheed Street.

“Next year, the RTA will construct 12 pedestrian bridges distributed over a number of vital locations including Bani Yas Street near Dubai Municipality building and a bridge on Damascus and Al Nahada streets.

“All of the bridges will be completed in the last quarter of 2015,” he said.

In another development, work is under way on constructing four covered and air-conditioned pedestrian bridges for the Dubai Tram project.
