Oman’s Special Economic Zone Authority at Duqm (Sezad) has signed three contracts worth RO169 million ($437 million) for the construction of the second package of the Duqm Port and a fishing port.

These contracts are part of a plan to make Sezad a major hub for the fishing industry.

Two of the contracts are for a RO60.7-million ($156.9 million) fishing port at Duqm. These include a consultancy agreement awarded to Sering International Engineering Consulting Company and AAK, and the construction of the fishing port, awarded to Galfar Engineering and Contracting.

The work involves the development of an industrial area with factories specialised in fish processing and canning. The project will be complete within 30 months from the commencement of work. The scope of work includes dredging the harbour basin up to 6 m and land reclamation, besides development of a tourist area with a wharf, pontoons, floating moorings for the fishermen’s pier with pontoons for coastguard, breakwaters with a total length of 3.4 km, and a fixed 850-m pier for fishing.

The third contract is for the construction of the second package of Duqm Port, which will be developed at a cost of RO107.3 million ($278 million).

A consortium of Portugal’s MSF Engenharia and Turkey’s Serka Taahhut won the package of infrastructure works at the commercial terminal and operational zone areas. Under the package, the consortium will work on infrastructure (potable water, fire-fighting, storm water drainage, sewerage, pumping stations, electrical and telecommunications networks), roads, buildings (offices, electrical services buildings, warehouses and maintenance buildings) and port crane beam and track works. The work is to be completed in 30 months.
