Bids have been invited for the development of the airfield systems, air traffic control (ATC) tower and utilities infrastructure (design and build) at Fujairah International Airport (FIA), as part of a multimillion-dollar expansion plan for the facility being undertaken in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Airports.

This follows a memorandum of co-operation (MoC) signed by the two airport authorities, under which Fujairah International will benefit from Abu Dhabi Airports’ experience in planning and managing an airport expansion.

The expansion programme includes construction of the new ATC tower, parallel runway, existing runway expansion to accommodate A380s, 33/11 kV primary substation, eight connecting taxiways including rapid exit taxiways and one parallel taxiway.

Bidders were required to submit an expression of interest (EOI) last month (August 23), post which a separate pre-qualification and tender process will follow. Apart from commercial operations, FIA has a strong focus on aircraft maintenance with maintenance, repair and operations (MRO), with multiple areas available for any size maintenance operations.

Additional MRO hangars are under construction to provide overhaul repair for the aircraft in the future, which includes five wide-body aircraft hangars and one 200 by 50 m hangar for aircraft parking.
