Both business and community can contribute greatly to environment protection and reduction of air pollution, a study conducted by UAE national students with the support of S S Lootah Group has concluded.

The findings of the research project on the air pollution in the UAE were submitted by Dubai Men's College students Humaid Al Nuaimi and Ahmed Suleiman.

“Air pollution can be reduced dramatically by using alternative fuels such as natural gas as a sustainable solution for the long term” said Ahmed Suleiman.

Referring to a recent study conducted by the Strategic Planning Department for Transport at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai which has revealed that vehicles contribute to 80 per cent of environment pollution in the emirate, both students explained the health risks associated with increasing vehicle emissions which includes carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and lead.

“These gases cause various respiratory disorders and even classified as cancerous due to their high toxic levels,” said Suleiman.

“Less acceleration and braking reduces vehicle emissions, making safe driving a key to achieve better air quality and reduction of health risks” he added.

Humaid Al Nuaimi’s presentation concluded that it is possible to use Biofuels in the UAE to show commitment to environment protection.

“Technology has improved over the years and there are millions of cars powered by natural gas, Biofuels and hybrid electric engines in the world today” said Al Nuaimi.

The month-long research project was part of S S Lootah Group’s UAE national students’ Summer Training Programme.

Students from Dubai Men’s College and Dubai Women’s College were imparted with a high level of corporate/social responsibility and assigned to various projects to obtain job-based training in Engineering, ICT, Business Administration, Marketing and Media Production.

The programme is designed to involve students in day-to-day meetings, discussions and briefs to encourage active participation in planning, management and execution of projects to explore potential career options, a key motivating factor for students.

Engineer Yahya Bin Saeed Al Lootah, vice-chairman, S S Lootah Group, attended the students’ presentations along with a line up of top group managers and program coordinators.

“I am overwhelmed with the personal and professional qualities the students have demonstrated during their training period” said Eng Yahya Lootah.

Lootah presented students with appreciation certificates in recognition of their impressive work and wished them another successful academic year.

“I hope to see more UAE nationals take on challenging career roles and become competent contributors to the national and regional economic growth and success,” said Lootah.
