Sharjah's Central Suq is undergoing internal redesign to create an additional 1,880 sq m to accommodate fast food restaurants, with 500 sq m designated for children's play areas, according to reports.
Ahmed Mohammed Fikri, director general of Sharjah Municipality, said that the new facilities are expected to revamp retail shopping activity in the area. Besides the expansion, the existing facilities will also undergo development.
The market represents a unique picturesque architectural feature, and is one of the oldest in the country. It will have new interior decoration, with its ceramic floor being replaced. Four new restrooms will be introduced and the existing two renovated. Two mosques for women will be constructed on the ground floor of each of the market's wings. An internal public address system will also be installed.
The Central Suq's exterior will be given a facelift and signs directing visitors will be installed. The market will have cooling systems, landscaping and more trees.
