Al Naboodah-Laing has won the Concourse 2 and Terminal 3 engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, the largest under the Dubai International Airport's $4.1 billion expansion project.
Five consortiums comprising local and international contractors bid for the project. Apart from Al Naboodah-Laing, they included CCC-Dutco Balfour Beatty, Al Habtoor-Murray and Roberts, Arabtec and Belhasa Six Construct and Higgs and Hills-Arabian Construction Company.
Construction work has now commenced and is expected to finish in 30 months. The project is the second phase of a comprehensive expansion plan to increase the airport's capacity to handle up to 70 million passengers per year by 2016.
''The tender, which includes engineering, procurement, construction, concrete and civil works, has been awarded to Al Naboodah-Laing after stiff competition between bidders, thorough study and evaluation of all the bids,'' said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and chairman of Emirates Group. ''The tender submitted by Al Naboodah-Laing suits our needs and priorities the most and matches our expectations.''
The value of the tender has not been disclosed by the DCA. ''We do not want to quote the value of the contract as a matter of policy to prevent others from pre-evaluating future tenders,'' said Sheikh Ahmed.
The airport's expansion is supervised by Dar Al Handasah and Airport de Paris
Passenger movement through Dubai is expected to reach 40 million by 2010 and 70 million by 2016.
The entire expansion programme includes construction of Terminal 3, concourse 2 and concourse 3 all dedicated for Emirates airline and a Mega Cargo Terminal.
