Demag Cranes and Components recently introduced the KEM travel unit  to enhance crane efficiency by improving maintenance and offering increased load capacity.

The travel unit has received a good response from the UAE market, says a spokesman for the Dubai-based Demag Cranes & Components (Middle East), and has already been installed on a crane for a key client in the UAE.
The units are available with track wheel diameters of 400 and 500 mm.
Elaborating on the component, he says: 'The KEM travel unit is available in a range of frame sizes and comprises a non-driven wheel set and a geared wheel set with motor.
'The system has recently been further developed to increase the ease of assembly and maintenance, reduce installation and service costs, and ensure higher unit availability.'
The corner bearing assembly really comes into its own when maintenance and repair is required, he points out.
'To change a wheel, the end carriage merely has to be raised slightly, the wheel rolled out through the opening at the front and the spare wheel rolled into position in the same easy manner,' the spokesman continues. 'In addition to saving time, the maintenance team also enjoys the benefits of much easier handling.
'While developing the unit, Demag was keen to retain the previous basic sizes so that the new units could also be used as replacement parts for the older versions. Customers also greatly benefit from the approximately 40 per cent increase in load capacity.
'The 400 mm diameter wheel set is now rated at 28 tonnes instead of 16.3 tonnes, while the 500 mm units offer 40 tonnes instead of 26.5 tonnes. This upgrade means that operators can, in many cases, use smaller wheels and thus also smaller gear units and motors.'
In terms of investment outlay alone, therefore, there are significant financial advantages from this new development, with the reduced assembly and service times further improving the bottom line, he adds.
