Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) Investments has announced a major expansion and renovation of its Ajman City Centre in the UAE.
The Dh11 million ($3 million) project is MAF’s third expansion in under a month, closely following the Dh20 million upgrade of the Sharjah City Centre and the introduction of 12 new brands at Deira City Centre. Designed to strengthen the mall’s dominant position in the city, the project will increase the floor size by 40,000 sq ft, bringing the total area to 364,000 sq ft.
MAF has also confirmed plans to set up four hypermarkets in Egypt over a four-year period, with a total investment of EGP2 billion ($325 million). The project is to be carried out in partnership with Carrefour, the French company that pioneered the hypermarket concept.
The MAF Group, which has the Middle East and North Africa rights of French retailer Carrefour, operates three malls in the UAE and one in Muscat (Oman), in addition to the two in Egypt. It has finalised plans for Bahrain and Beirut (Lebanon).
The two largest developments will be in Alexandria and 6 October City, each planned to occupy 280,000 sq m and cost $103 million. One market will be built in central Cairo, covering 60,000 sq m and budgeted at $38.5 million, and the fourth will be built on a 65,000 sq m site between Nasr City and Heliopolis at a cost of $77 million.
Eight companies have been pre-qualified for two contracts to build the hypermarkets at Alexandria and Cairo.
