International flooring specialist Flowcrete has provided two of its flooring systems to meet the high-quality specifications at the 30-storey residential development which is part of the BurJuman shopping mall complex.
“Expansion of the BurJuman Centre in Dubai, has called for the very best in everything – right from the flooring to the materials used,” says a spokesman for Flowcrete.
Flowcrete’s first contract at the BurJuman Centre involved providing over 60,000 sq m of its Deckshield ID (intermediate deck) car-park decking system for the four levels of basement parking that will provide 3,200 car-parking spaces for the retail development. This is one of the largest ever Deckshield installations to be secured by the Flowcrete Group.
Deckshield ID was specified by architects Buro Happold of the UK, for its ability to meet the specifications of a durable, protective decking system. Deckshield, which is a flexible, crack-bridging, waterproof system, was installed by Pegasus, Flowcrete’s licensed Deckshield applicator in Dubai and is well suited for intermediate decks of multi-storey car parks. Available in a range of colours, the system reduces noise from tyre squeal and enhances the ambience, making multi-storey car parks lighter, safer environments to visit, says Devanand Sirwani, Flowcrete’s Middle East regional manager.
“Deckshield’s international track record was a key factor in securing the work. The system has been widely used in the UK, Dubai and South East Asia and has many outstanding references at airports, retail developments, commercial centres and government buildings. Among these are the world-class airports of Malaysia’s KLIA (Kaula Lumpur International Airport) and Hong Kong’s Chep Lap Kok and over 900 hospitals around the world,” he says.
The second contract involved the supply of 85,000 sq m of K-Screed at the 30-storey apartment tower of the BurJuman Centre residential phase. K-Screed was specified at some 163 apartments within the tower, over conventional sand/cement screed for its high compressive strength and its low water-cement ratio, which minimises shrinkage and cracking. A further important factor was the fast drying time, enabling following trades to typically start work within 48 hours of installation of the K-Screed, says Sarwani.
A semi-dry cementitious system, K-Screed can be installed bonded, unbonded or as in the case of the BurJuman project – floating. This has enabled impact sound insulation to be included within the flooring. K-Screed is being provided to site in ready-mix form by RMC-Topmix, Flowcrete’s licensed distributor in Dubai.
K-Screed can be used for a wide range of flooring requirements – in commercial buildings such as airports, convention centres and hotels, as well as retail developments, hospitals and municipal buildings. The K-Screed forms a smooth, durable surface as a base for installation of the final selected floor finish, such as epoxy resin, fitted carpet, wood, tiles or vinyl.
“The beauty of K-Screed is not just its versatility. As a proprietary specialist flooring system, it is delivered and installed complete with warranty, giving customers added peace of mind,” Sirwani concludes.
