Tabreed, the National Central Cooling Company has been awarded a contract to supply cooling to Capital Towers, a major new residential and hotel development which is currently under construction on Sheikh Zayed Road, in Dubai.

The 10-year contract signed with parent company Capital Investment International makes Capital Towers Tabreed’s second largest client on Sheikh Zayed Road after the Shangri-La Hotel. The cooling capacity being supplied to Capital Towers will total 3,000 tonnes of refrigeration and is slated to begin in 2005.
Commenting on the signing of the contract, Mohammed Al Qamzi, chief operating officer, Tabreed, said, “Tabreed is very pleased to be associated with the 90,000 sq m two-tower project, which is anticipated to be among the most sophisticated of the skyscrapers currently under development. Capital Investment has illustrated that it has a clear understanding of the importance of energy saving and the environmental benefits of district cooling technology.”
The 35-storey tower will contain a 160-room hotel and 60 serviced apartments while the second 40-storey tower will house 260 private residential luxury apartments. There will also be a four-storey glass-covered courtyard connecting the towers, which will accommodate cafes, restaurants and retail outlets. The hotel will include a health club, spa and open-air leisure deck with an infinity pool.
Meanwhile, Tabreed has opened of a new micro tunnel connecting both sides of Sheikh Zayed Road, enabling it to augment its service capacity, and provide cooling services to buildings on the other side of the road.
Announcing the opening of the tunnel, Al Qamzi said: “Tabreed already has an impressive clientele base on one side of Shaikh Zayed Road – the tunnel will help us mirror the success on the other side of the road and by the level of interest expressed in our services, success will be a reality.”
“The tunnel is one of the longest in the region and is the second to be built by Tabreed, the first being in Abu Dhabi,” Al Qamzi added. “The distinguishing feature of this tunnel is that it was constructed without disrupting the road or surrounding areas, unlike others in the region. Tunnel space and facilities can also be availed of by companies that wish to run power lines and fibre optic cables through it.”
The system consists of two tunnels, one supplying the chilled water and the other returning it to the district cooling station. The tunnel has been placed at a depth of 6 m underground, with concrete sleeves of 1,200 mm inner and 1,490 mm outer diameter.
