One of the region’s most complex and visually striking museum developments – Guggenheim Abu Dhabi – is nearing completion with its long-awaited opening now confirmed for December 11, 2026.
Designed by the late Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate Frank Gehry, the landmark museum represents one of the region’s most ambitious structural engineering and architectural achievements. Situated at the tip of Saadiyat Island, surrounded on three sides by the Arabian Gulf, the 80,000-sq-m complex anchors the expanding Saadiyat Cultural District through an intricate fusion of heavy sub- and superstructures, structural steel, glass, and sustainable design.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, a museum of modern and contemporary art, is the result of a visionary collaboration between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT-Abu Dhabi) and the Solomon R Guggenheim Foundation.
The architecture of the museum is an integral part of the artistic experience and is designed to impress at every level, delivering a powerful presence externally and an immersive experience within.
The building’s signature silhouette is defined by 10 asymmetric sculptural cones reaching heights of up to 88 m. Serving simultaneously as monumental visual anchors, light wells, and primary circulation pathways, the cones were inspired by the region’s traditional wind towers (barjeels).
Nine of the conical features are clad in custom-engineered stainless steel mesh, while a central accent cone incorporates a translucent onyx and glass assembly. Beyond their striking visual impact, the open-air forms function as passive microclimate regulators, capturing sea breezes to naturally ventilate and shade the adjacent courtyards and terraces.
Inside the central shell, the museum encompasses 30 distinct galleries distributed across 11,600 sq m of internal exhibition space, all interconnected by a soaring central atrium. The indoor space is further augmented by 23,000 sq m of exterior exhibition areas woven directly into surrounding terraces and the lower chambers of the cones. This creates an uninterrupted spatial dialogue between interior curatorial spaces and the surrounding maritime landscape.
The main construction scope, awarded to a joint venture between BESIX (Six Construct) and Trojan General Contracting, translates Gehry’s signature organic forms into a heavy civil framework. Combining concrete sub- and superstructures with structural steelwork, glulam timber elements, glass, and aluminium, the complex integrates heavy structural design with passive desert microclimate cooling principles.
Built to meet Estidama Pearl 3 sustainability criteria, the project incorporates high-performance glazing, intelligent shading dynamics, and eco-friendly material selection.
When it opens, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be the largest asset in the Solomon R Guggenheim Foundation’s international constellation.
The museum enhances a cluster of cultural developments on Saadiyat Island, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.
The completed structure will feature a global collection spanning Modern and Contemporary media – from sculpture and painting to new media and site-specific commissions – focused on transcultural artistic movements from 1960 to the present day.
