HITACHI Construction Machinery (Europe) (HCME) has added two new models to its fleet of mini excavators, following the successful launch of the ZX14-3 last year.

Hitachi engineers have combined customer feedback with their technical expertise to develop Hitachi ZX16-3 and ZX18-3, which are available with a cab or canopy and are designed for light applications in confined spaces, such as utilities, gardening/landscaping and general-purpose groundworks.
These machines also provide better performance, comfort and safety and benefit from reduced running costs, according to their manufacturer.
Product sales manager compact line (EMEA) Joep van den Maagdenberg says: “These new Zaxis models have already been tested extensively on a wide range of job sites and like every Hitachi mini excavator have been designed with durability, ease of maintenance and operator comfort in mind.”
The new models are equipped with powerful and economical three-cylinder 10.7 kW engines, which provide a significant increase in performance. Their superior power-to-weight ratios allow rapid acceleration and smooth operation in comparison with the previous models (ZX16 and ZX18).
The Zaxis minis also have improved overall front speed and more precise handling capabilities, as well as an 18 per cent increase in digging force over their predecessors. The ZX18-3 has a more durable blade and an adjustable foot crawler for enhanced stability, he says.
With operating weights of just 1,600 kg and 1,770 kg respectively, the lightweight characteristics of ZX16-3 and ZX18-3  enable them to be easily transported by trailer.
Elaborating on their operator-friendly features, van den Maagdenberg says: “The Hitachi ZX16-3 and ZX18-3 have been designed with comfort and safety in mind. The wide opening door allows the operator to enter the spacious cab with ease. The canopy variants have a convenient walk-through design, which allows easy access to the controls from either side of the machine.
“The fully-adjustable fabric seat equipped with suspension absorbs vibrations during operation to reduce operator fatigue. In addition, the internal controls have been ergonomically designed and the speed selection switch has been placed on top of the blade lever grip for added convenience.
“All ZX16-3 and ZX18-3 mini excavators can be fitted with an optional theft deterrent system, which requires the entry of a code to prevent illegal operation or vandalism.
“Other key features include the neutral engine start system and shut-off lever, which prevent accidental movements, and the single pin in the vertical swing post to minimise jerking.”
Reduced running costs for the Hitachi ZX16-3 and ZX18-3 may be attributed to the use of highly durable components.
The machines’ D-shaped frame provides additional reinforcement and helps to prevent damage caused by obstacles. The boom is reinforced with a strong, ribbed cylinder cover, which provides higher impact resistance. The counterweight also extends over both sides of the machine for further protection.
