The College of Health Sciences for Boys campus.

Early last month, Recafco was putting the finishing touches to two key buildings in the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training's (PAAET) Shuwaikh Campus. The buildings are located between Al Sabah Hospital to the west and Shuwaikh Industrial Area to the east.

The buildings (which were scheduled for completion by the end of November) are the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) buildings and its two-tiered car-park and the College of Health Sciences for Boys.
Under a contract valued at KD8.7 million ($29.2 million), Recafco has carried out the construction of the ITI buildings and the car-park, over a 70,000 sq m site.
The consultant on the project was Industrial & Engineering Consulting Office (Inco) while the construction manager was Turner Projacs.

The ITI buildings have a built-up area of 21,100 sq m, while the car-park offers a built-up area of 22, 248 sq m.
Recafco's scope of works on the project included the construction and maintenance of ITI buildings including administration offices, a multi-purpose hall, a library, main entrance/plaza, cultural and social club with auditorium, sports activities buildings with a gymnasium, squash courts, cafeteria with kitchen and servery, maintenance building with stores and offices, classrooms, staff rooms, clinic, workshops, laboratories and a substation.
Work on the two-tiered car-park included entry and exit ramps, car-park canopies with steel structure and fabric.

The contract also included construction of internal roads, pedestrian walkways, signage including all temporary facilities, demolition, shoring, excavation, dewatering, civil structure, architectural finishes, electrical works, low-voltage systems, telephone network, lighting, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, plumbing, fire-fighting, irrigation, drainage, elevators, LPG system and soft and hard landscaping works.
The buildings sit on reinforced concrete foundations and comprise columns, beams and slabs. The workshop areas are covered by a steel space-frame of the bolted and co-axial node type.The flooring finishes vary depending on the areas and include terrazzo, marble and ceramic tiles, concrete with floor hardener, carpet, resilient flooring and wood flooring.The external facade of the buildings comprises sandlime brick walls and aluminium composite panels.

College of Health Sciences for Boys
Under a KD5.8 million contract, Recafco was entrusted with the construction of a three-storey main building covering a 7,000 sq m plot and a two-storey administration building (600 sq m) complete with mechanical and electrical services to accommodate the College of Health Sciences for Boys. The administration block is linked to the main building via bridges at the first and second floor levels.
The scope of the contract also included a substation, a 3,300 sq m amphitheatre, a 340-slot surface car-parking area, infrastructure works, utilities and hard and soft landscaping works.

Externally, the buildings are clad with precast concrete panels while the internal walls are plastered and painted. The main entrance features glazed curtain-walls and the theme is continued indoors where the atrium at the main entrance features glass block walls. The atrium area is covered by structural steel trusses, skylights and sandwich panels. Five elevators serve the buildings.
Recafco was also responsible for the complete plumbing. fire alarm and fire-fighting systems, HVAC systems with chilled/hot water pumps, air-handling units, piping and ducting, and electrical and telephone systems. The consultant is Bonyan Design and the construction manager  is Turner Projacs.
