ALSTOM, a global leader in the world of power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure, has signed a contract worth $122 million with Arabian Bemco Contracting Company and GS E&C to provide a steam tail for a Riyadh-based power plant.

Facelift for Bahrain corniche

ONE of Bahrain’s most popular seafronts along the Al Fateh Corniche is finally set to undergo a major facelift after two years of delays, said senior government officials.

A shortage of funds delayed the BD1.2-million ($3.18 million) project, which was due to have begun in July 2010. The work to clear up the coastline along the corniche, build a new walkway and instal playground facilities is expected to begin by the end of the year, they stated. The 153,430-sq-m project will feature recreational and family areas as well as restaurants and coffee shops. The area is part of a 4-km public beach project and includes a 3-km coastline from near Isa Cultural Centre to the Prince Khalifa Bridge.

“We are just waiting for the budget to be officially assigned to begin work on the project,” said Mohammed Noor Al Shaikh, Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs Ministry joint municipal services under-secretary.

He also said the next phase of the project, which was still only a proposal, would see a jetty being built at either end of the corniche.

SolarReserve plans Saudi venture

US-BASED manufacturer of concentrated solar power SolarReserve, is planning multiple bids for Saudi Arabia’s first renewable-energy tender as the country plans to generate a third of its electricity from solar energy.

SolarReserve has formed a joint venture in Saudi Arabia and is working on preliminary proposals for the tender, Kevin Smith, its chief executive officer said. Its concentrated solar power technology uses thousands of mirrors to focus sunlight onto a central point to generate heat, which is then used to produce power. The energy can be stored in molten salt until electricity is needed.

Saudi Arabia plans to start its first tender targeting 2,000 MW of solar energy in early next year; and a second tender in 2014 aiming for 2,500 MW. The country in May said it is looking for investors to build a $109-billion solar industry by 2032. Companies including Canadian Solar, and CentrothermPhotovoltaics have also expressed an interest in the region.
