Bauer machines at work on the site.

Bauer Egypt, the Egyptian subsidiary of Bauer Spezialtief-bau of Germany, has won a €20 million ($31.5 million) contract to undertake a series of works on Cairo Metro Line 3.

Under the contract, the company will have to complete the deep excavations for four metro stations, one access shaft for the tunnel boring machine and four air-conditioning shafts.
The contract is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Cairo Metro Line 3, currently under construction in the Egyptian capital, will link the city with the airport.
The mega-city on the Nile, with its 16 million inhabitants, is the only city on the African continent with an underground railway system. The new line will extend the existing underground system from currently two to three lines. The client for this project is the Egyptian Ministry of Transport, represented by the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) – Greater Cairo Metro.
The contract was awarded by a consortium of several large construction companies, which formed the main contractor for the 4.3 km long Phase One, Line 3 project.
The Egyptian subsidiary of Bauer carries out contracts autonomously and is supported by the Service Department of Bauer Spezialtiefbau.
Each of the four deep excavations is approximately 150 m long and 25 m wide. For these excavations, diaphragm walls with thicknesses ranging between 0.8 m and 1.2 m and depths of up to 55 m are being constructed. On one of the access shafts, the diaphragm walls are even up to 61 m deep.  At the deepest elevation of each structure, a soft-gel horizontal grout cut-off up to 5 m thick is being constructed. As the excavations are carried out by the top-down construction technique, the diaphragm walls are not tied back, but instead are propped by the reinforced concrete slabs, says a spokesman for the company.
Bauer Egypt has deployed a large number of heavy-duty plant and equipment on this project, the majority of which is manufactured by Bauer Maschinen. Amongst the heavy-duty plant are two diaphragm wall cutters – a BC 40 and a BC 30. A BC 20 is also being deployed for short periods. In addition, four Bauer heavy-duty drilling rigs are in operation, two BG 28 and two BG 9. These are supported by an extensive range of peripheral plant and equipment from the Bauer Maschinen Group and several service cranes. In some areas of the site, the diaphragm wall cutters operate at a distance of just 2 m from existing buildings.
The construction of the new metro line is expected to help Cairo ease its traffic congestion problems.
