Major housing projects to be built on reclaimed land in Bahrain have received the green light following a Cabinet approval of an additional BD25 million ($66.25 million) allocation for these projects.

Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa called for the speedy implementation of the projects.

The new funds will be used over a period of two years for the projects, which include massive reclamation of land in several key shoreline areas.

The scheme, which also includes an annual budget of BD10 million for housing loans, is being undertaken to alleviate a housing shortage for Bahrain's citizens.

  • More than 320 families are to benefit from a new housing scheme in Sitra which will include building 106 homes and selling 215 plots of land to families wanting to build their own, said Housing and Agriculture Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

He was speaking as he toured the project site, where he was briefed about reclamation work and reviewed plans for the new scheme. 'The faster we complete the project, the shorter period the applicants will have to wait. Keeping this in mind, we are trying our best to finish the work as fast as we can,'' he said.

Shaikh Khalid said the 215 new plots will range from 200 to 300 sq m in size.

'In addition to the plots for homes, the area will also have space for public utilities, such as sewerage, water pipelines, telephone lines as well as mosques, shops and schools,' he said.

Shaikh Khalid said people were being given the chance to purchase Government land in Sitra, following the success of a similar scheme in Diraz last year.
