Alam Steel Industries (ASI), a subsidiary of Alam Steel has scored a major milestone by becoming the first rebar processing factory in the Middle East to be awarded the certificate of approval from UK Cares (UK Certification Authority for Reinforcing Steels).

The certificate has been awarded for its compliance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9001 2000 and the relevant Cares quality requirements for rebar processing to BS8666, said a company executive.
Ben Bowsher, the executive director of UK Cares, presented the certificate to ASI chairman Shyam Bhatia at a ceremony held in Dubai.
“With the vast amount of construction activity in the region it is imperative that the entire steel reinforcement supply chain is certified,” said Bowsher. “It is not sufficient for consultants to specify Cares-certified rebar alone and then have it processed by a non-Cares approved processor. Such rebar, processed incorrectly and without the necessary controls, may not comply with the specification and may even be a risk to the concrete structure,” he warned.
“We have always been leaders of innovation within the steel industry and being the first processing factory to be accredited by Cares reinforces that position,” said Vikram Bhatia of Alam Steel.
Following the certification, ASI is entitled to use the Cares mark on all of its reinforcing steel products.
A leader in the steel distribution and manufacturing industry, Alam Steel has maintained strong relationships with many of the largest contracting and engineering firms in the region.
Founded in Dubai in 1979, with offices in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, and the Jebel Ali Free Zone, Alam Steel currently has over a million sq ft of state-of-the-art distribution facilities that services the region. The manufacturing subsidiary of the group, Alam Steel Industries (ASI) processes reinforcement bars at its 20,000 sq ft facility in the Dubai Investment Park. ASI commenced operations in June last year and has an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes.
