Saudi Builds

Steel strength

The Riyadh-based Al Yamamah Steel Industries Company is looking to promote the company's products to a larger audience at the Saudi Build.

Established in 1988, Yamamah produces round steel pipes, square and rectangular steel tubes, hot rolled steel sheets, cold rolled steel sheets, galvanised steel sheets, steel strapping and design, supply and installation of 3D space frame structures.

The areas of application of the products include: building construction, agriculture, educational institutes, shelters and commercial complexes.

With a workforce of 150, the company had a turnover of SR115 million ($31 million) during the 1999 financial year. The business this year has been growing satisfactorily so far, says Khaldoun Mhaimeed, division manager.

The company has a production capacity of 140,000 tonnes per year (tpy) of steel and 52,000 sq m per year space frame structures.

Yamamah, which has participated at previous Saudi Build exhibitions, has received good response at the shows.

Yamamah has a share of about 25 per cent of the Saudi market for steel pipes, tubes and sheets and has posted an outstanding growth in space frame structures, says Mhaimeed.

The company has acquired "approved vendor" status from both Saudi Aramco and Sceco (Saudi Consolidated Electric Company).

The space frames unit is a separate division within the company. Named Yamamah Space Structures, it provides complete design and engineering, fabrication and erection services.

Yamamah Space Frames consist of nodes and tubes interconnected to form a three-dimensional structural system that afford a myriad of advantages in construction.

The advantages include: Unlimited design freedom; aesthetics; structural efficiency, long span capability with random support flexibility; cost effectiveness; compact packing; and ease of erection and adaptability.

"There is absolutely no limitation on what one could use the space structures for - from the most elegantly simple to the most structurally challenging system," he says.

Yamamah Space Structures has the resources to provide a world class service and accommodate any specification and delivery schedule at a very competitive price, says Mhaimeed.

Yamamah engineers provide a total support for the space frame projects from design inception to final inspection.

"Yamamah space frames are manufactured to strict standards. Every component and every manufacturing and finishing operation is subject to a scrutinising quality control procedure to assure a final quality product," he continues.

The company's space frame engineering experience spans over many years, five continents and hundreds of space frames.

"Our experience encompasses the design, manufacture and erection of the most challenging space structures in the world such as Shah Alam Stadium in Malaysia, Brunei Sports Complex in Brunei Darrusalam, the World Bank in Washington DC and Dubai Police Station in Dubai," he says.

On future plans, he says the company intends to expand in the Gulf market.

Yamamah will be showcasing its products at Stand No. 942 at Saudi Build 2000.
